Requirements for Level 3 Certification

Texas Defense Force Security (TXDF) / TXDF Schools Level 3 Certification course is designed to prepare TXDF officers for service to their communities.  We offer this online training to anyone interested in obtaining their level 3 security license. To become a commissioned security officer in Texas, you must complete the DPS training requirements for Level 3 certification.

This includes:
  • Completing the online classroom portion of the course (35 hours)
  • Participating in practical training sessions (10 hours)
  • Passing a written exam administered by the DPS
  • Completing in-person defensive tactics and firearms qualification components

Licensing Process

Do you need a license in Texas?

YES! Impersonating a security officer (commissioned or non-commissioned) is a Class A misdemeanor.  You will be arrested.

In-Person Training Requirements

While our online training program makes it easy to complete the classroom portion, there are still some in-person requirements you must meet. This includes:

  • Completing defensive tactics and firearms qualification components
  • Passing the Level 3 certification live fire qualification test
  • Completing shotgun qualification (if required)

Continuing Education Requirements

As a commissioned security officer, it's essential that you stay up-to-date on the latest protocols and procedures.
